SALEM — Most Oregon employers will soon be prohibited from using credit histories to screen out potential hires, following the Legislature’s final approval Monday of a ban on the practice.

The House’s 33-26 vote sends its bill to the governor for his expected signature. The ban would take effect July 1.

More than half of all U.S. employers rely on credit histories to determine which job applicants to hire. But the practice has come under fire as hundreds of thousands of people have lost work and are hampered in their job search by poor credit histories.

SALEM – The House today passed SB 1045, the Job Applicant Fairness Act. SB 1045 will restrict job related credit checks, making it easier for qualified job applicants to get back to work. House Democrats’ top priority during the February special session is to create jobs and help families struggling because of the recession. The Job Applicant Fairness Act is part of that effort.

Residents in Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas and Lane counties who own inexpensive manufactured homes may soon get a pass on property taxes.

House Bill 3640, set for a vote tomorrow morning, would cancel property taxes on manufactured homes assessed at less than $15,000 in the four counties. The legislation received unanimous support from the House revenue committee.

Oregon House Democrats welcome Val Hoyle to the House of Representatives after she was unanimously chosen by Lane County Commissioners to succeed former Rep. Chris Edwards in Lane County’s District 14 representing West Eugene, Santa Clara and Junction City. Edwards is now a State Senator who was recently chosen to replace former Senator Vicki Walker.

SALEM – House Democrats today welcomed their two newest members, Representative Margaret Doherty (D-Tigard) and Representative Val Hoyle (D-Eugene), who were sworn in inside the State Capitol. Both Representatives will begin committee work right away.

“I’d like to extend my congratulations to Representatives Doherty and Hoyle on today’s swearing-in,” said House Democratic Majority Leader Mary Nolan. “I know they are eager to get to work on behalf of their constituents and all Oregonians.”

The Lane County Board of Commissioners had a strong field of contenders seeking to fill the vacant District 14 seat in the state House of Representatives, but the choice was clear: Val Hoyle’s range of relevant experience was broad enough to make her the commissioners’ unanimous choice on Wednesday.
